Vice

Vice, ein unabänderliches Beywort, welches aus dem Französischen vice, entlehnet ist, und so, wie dieses, nur in Zusammensetzungen gebraucht wird, eine Person zu bezeichnen, welche die Stelle einer andern vertritt, und mit derselben eine ähnliche, obgleich geringere und untergeordnete Würde hat. Daher der Vice-Admiral, welcher in manchen Staaten noch von dem Unter-Admiral unterschieden wird; der Vice-König, Franz. Vice-Roi, der Unterkönig, ehedem der Schaltkönig, welcher nicht mit einem bloßen Statthalter verwechselt werden muß, indem jener, außer mehrerer Gewalt, auch mit vielem äußern Pompe der königlichen Würde bekleidet ist; der Vice-Kanzler, der Unterkanzler, und hundert andere Zusammensetzungen mehr. Bey den Buchbindern wird der erste und letzte Bund an einem Buche, der ohne Schnüre ist, das Vice-Gebünde genannt. Im Deutschen kann man das Vice- in vielen Fällen durch Unter- ausdrucken. In dem alten Strasburgischen Stadtrechte bey dem Schilter kommt dafür das sonst unbekannte Spett vor; Spettschöff, Vice-Schöppe, Spettmeister, Vice-Meister.
